Developing a Community Environmental Plan

Course code EDM 008. Development, Environment and Agriculture.

About this course

Takes delegates step by step through preparing a community environmental plan. Steps include stakeholder identification, participatory environmental assessment, problem ranking, goal and action setting, budgeting, assigning responsibilities and setting up monitoring. Delegates produce a draft plan for a real community or ward and practise presenting it to local stakeholders.

Why this course

Waste dumping, river pollution, land degradation and loss of green space are often best tackled at local level, but communities and ward officials rarely have a structured plan. A clear, jointly owned environmental plan helps attract funding, links to municipal planning and turns complaints into practical action.

What delegates will be able to do

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to

  • Identify and engage the stakeholders who need to shape a community environmental plan
  • Conduct a participatory assessment of local environmental problems
  • Rank environmental issues and set realistic goals and actions
  • Prepare a budget, action schedule and responsibility matrix for the plan
  • Present the draft plan to a community meeting or council committee

Who should attend

Ward councillors, municipal environmental and community development officers, local NGO and community-based organisation staff, and environmental volunteers. No technical environmental qualification is needed.
