About this course
Builds on working knowledge of disaster risk management to cover multi-hazard risk assessment, contingency and continuity planning, incident command structures, multi-agency coordination and post-disaster recovery planning. Delegates test plans through simulation exercises, review after-action findings and align institutional arrangements with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
Why this course
Floods, droughts, fires and disease outbreaks regularly overwhelm response systems that exist on paper but have never been tested. Senior officials who lead coordination centres must make decisions under pressure, direct several agencies at once and plan recovery that reduces future risk. The course strengthens that leadership capacity.
What delegates will be able to do
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to
- Conduct a multi-hazard risk and vulnerability assessment for a district or organisation
- Design a contingency plan with clear triggers, roles and resource requirements
- Set up and run an incident command structure during a major emergency
- Plan and evaluate a tabletop or functional simulation exercise
- Prepare a recovery and reconstruction plan that reduces future disaster risk
Who should attend
Disaster management heads, emergency services managers, municipal and provincial coordinators, humanitarian programme managers and SOE risk managers. Delegates should already have practical experience in emergency response or have completed foundation-level disaster management training.
How it is delivered
Facilitator-led sessions with African case studies, a multi-agency tabletop simulation and group work on delegates' own contingency plans. It is available as a public course, in-house at your premises, or as live virtual sessions. Duration and dates are confirmed in your quote, and in-house groups can have the examples and exercises fitted to their organisation.
