About this course
Addresses the strategy and management of rural development and extension systems at programme and institutional level. Topics include pluralistic and demand-driven extension models, farmer field schools, digital advisory services, public-private extension partnerships, integrated rural development planning, extension financing, performance management of extension staff and evaluation of extension impact.
Why this course
Many extension services work with few officers per farmer, limited transport and approaches that have changed little in decades. Managers need strategies that reach more farmers at lower cost and show measurable results. Senior staff leave able to redesign extension systems and rural development programmes to meet those demands.
What delegates will be able to do
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to
- Evaluate the strengths and limits of different extension delivery models
- Design an extension strategy that combines public, private and digital channels
- Develop an integrated rural development plan for a district or region
- Set performance standards and targets for extension staff
- Plan an impact evaluation of an extension or rural development programme
Who should attend
Senior extension managers, directors and deputy directors of agriculture and rural development, district coordinators and programme managers in NGOs and development agencies. Experience in extension or rural development work is assumed.
How it is delivered
Facilitator-led sessions with comparative case studies, strategy development in groups, analysis of delegates' own extension systems and peer review of plans. It is available as a public course, in-house at your premises, or as live virtual sessions.
