About this course
Focuses on the electrical tests used to commission transformers and assess their condition. Delegates cover insulation resistance and polarisation index, turns ratio, winding resistance, vector group and polarity checks, magnetising current, tan delta and capacitance, sweep frequency response analysis and the interpretation of dissolved gas analysis results, with emphasis on safe test set-up and reporting.
Why this course
Power transformers are among the most expensive assets in any network, and long replacement lead times turn a failure into an extended outage. Testing confirms new units are fit for service and detects winding, core and insulation problems before failure. Accurate results give engineers the evidence to plan repairs or replacement.
What delegates will be able to do
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to
- Perform turns ratio, winding resistance and vector group tests on transformers
- Measure insulation resistance, tan delta and capacitance of transformer insulation
- Carry out a sweep frequency response analysis test and compare with baseline traces
- Interpret dissolved gas analysis results to identify likely internal faults
- Compile a transformer test report with conclusions on condition
Who should attend
Test technicians, commissioning engineers, and protection and substation technicians at utilities, municipalities, mines and industrial plants. Delegates should be familiar with transformer construction and safe working practices in substations.
How it is delivered
Practical sessions with transformer test sets on sample units, facilitator demonstrations and analysis of real test and dissolved gas analysis data. It is available as a public course or in-house at your premises. The practical work needs equipment and supervision, so it is not offered online. Duration and dates are confirmed in your quote, and in-house groups can have the examples and exercises fitted to their organisation.
