About this course
Builds the ability to choose, use and care for the instruments electrical staff rely on. Delegates work with multimeters, clamp meters, voltage detectors, insulation resistance testers, earth resistance testers, loop impedance and RCD testers, phase rotation meters and power quality analysers, and learn measurement categories, safe connection, reading interpretation and checking instruments before use.
Why this course
Using the wrong instrument or category rating on a live circuit can cause arc flash injuries, and misread results lead to wrong diagnoses and unsafe installations. Many staff use only a fraction of what their instruments can do. Proper training improves safety, the accuracy of test results and the speed of fault finding.
What delegates will be able to do
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to
- Select an instrument with the correct measurement category for a task
- Prove a voltage detector before and after testing for dead
- Measure insulation resistance, earth resistance and loop impedance correctly
- Use a power quality analyser to record voltage, current and harmonics
- Interpret instrument readings and identify faulty or out-of-calibration instruments
Who should attend
Electricians, apprentices, maintenance technicians, inspectors and testing staff in utilities, municipalities, mines, factories and electrical contracting firms. Delegates should have basic electrical knowledge and some practical experience.
How it is delivered
Hands-on practical sessions with a range of test instruments on training boards, facilitator demonstrations and measurement exercises with result interpretation. It is available as a public course or in-house at your premises. The practical work needs equipment and supervision, so it is not offered online. Duration and dates are confirmed in your quote, and in-house groups can have the examples and exercises fitted to their organisation.
