About this course
Addresses the rules and procedures for safe switching and operation of distribution networks. Delegates study operating regulations and authorisation levels, switching instructions and programmes, isolation and earthing, permits to work and sanction-for-test documents, network diagrams, communication with control centres, fault restoration and the investigation of operating incidents.
Why this course
Operating errors such as switching onto earths, working on unproved circuits or miscommunication with control can cause fatalities and widespread outages. Clear procedures followed consistently are the main defence. Training builds shared discipline across operators, supervisors and control staff and supports compliance with occupational health and safety legislation.
What delegates will be able to do
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to
- Prepare and check a switching programme for a planned distribution outage
- Apply isolation, proving dead and earthing steps in the correct sequence
- Issue, accept and cancel permits to work and related safety documents
- Communicate switching instructions with control using standard terminology
- Restore supply after a fault following approved operating procedures
Who should attend
Authorised operators, network controllers, shift supervisors, electricians and technicians who switch or work on distribution networks at utilities, municipalities, mines and large industrial sites. Delegates should have basic knowledge of distribution networks.
How it is delivered
Facilitator-led sessions with switching exercises on network diagrams, role-plays of control room communication and case studies of operating incidents. It is available as a public course, in-house at your premises, or as live virtual sessions. Duration and dates are confirmed in your quote, and in-house groups can have the examples and exercises fitted to their organisation.
