About this course
Planning for, responding to and recovering from disasters such as floods, droughts, fires, epidemics and industrial accidents. Delegates cover hazard and vulnerability assessment, disaster risk reduction, contingency planning, incident command structures, emergency communication, coordination with government and humanitarian agencies, and post-disaster recovery. The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction is used as a reference point.
Why this course
Floods, cyclones, droughts and disease outbreaks regularly disrupt services across southern and eastern Africa, and industrial sites face their own fire and chemical risks. Organisations without tested plans lose time, assets and sometimes lives in the first hours of an incident. Trained staff can assess risk, prepare realistic plans and coordinate a response with emergency services and other agencies.
What delegates will be able to do
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to
- Conduct a hazard, vulnerability and capacity assessment for a site or community
- Prepare a contingency plan with clear roles, resources and triggers
- Apply incident command principles during an emergency response
- Coordinate response activities with emergency services, government and relief agencies
- Plan recovery measures that reduce exposure to future disasters
Who should attend
Disaster management officers, municipal and provincial emergency planners, business continuity and SHE managers, and operations managers at utilities, SOEs and private companies with sites exposed to natural or industrial hazards.
How it is delivered
Facilitator-led sessions with regional case studies, group risk assessments, and a tabletop simulation in which delegates manage an unfolding disaster scenario. It is available as a public course, in-house at your premises, or as live virtual sessions. Duration and dates are confirmed in your quote, and in-house groups can have the examples and exercises fitted to their organisation.
