Advanced Public Health Research Methodology

Course code HOHS 002. Health, Safety and Wellness.

About this course

Advanced study design and analysis for researchers who already run public health studies. Topics include cohort, case-control and intervention designs, sampling and power calculations, managing bias and confounding, multivariable regression, mixed-methods integration, research ethics review and writing for peer-reviewed journals and policy briefs. Delegates refine a protocol or dataset of their own during the course.

Why this course

Public health decisions on screening, vaccination and resource allocation depend on evidence that is only as good as the study behind it. Poorly designed or analysed studies waste funding and can mislead policy. Advanced methods training lets ministries, research units and programmes produce findings that withstand peer review and donor scrutiny.

What delegates will be able to do

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to

  • Select and justify an appropriate design for an analytic or intervention study
  • Calculate sample sizes and power for common public health study designs
  • Identify and control for bias and confounding in study design and analysis
  • Run and interpret multivariable regression models in statistical software
  • Prepare a research protocol ready for ethics committee submission

Who should attend

Epidemiologists, research officers, monitoring and evaluation specialists and academic staff in health ministries, research institutes and NGOs. Delegates should have completed basic research methods training and be comfortable with descriptive statistics.

How it is delivered

Facilitator-led sessions with hands-on analysis in statistical software such as Stata, SPSS or R, using sample datasets and delegates' own study protocols. It is available as a public course, in-house at your premises, or as live virtual sessions. Duration and dates are confirmed in your quote, and in-house groups can have the examples and exercises fitted to their organisation.

Upcoming dates

Public course dates appear here once the course calendar is live. In-house dates are arranged with you.
