About this course
Low, medium and high voltage circuit breakers are tested during commissioning and maintenance, and delegates learn each test in turn. Content includes breaker types and operating mechanisms, contact resistance measurement, timing and travel tests, insulation resistance, coil current analysis, SF6 gas checks, vacuum interrupter integrity tests and interpretation of results against manufacturer limits.
Why this course
A breaker that fails to open on a fault can turn a minor fault into a fire, explosion or wide outage. Mechanism wear, contact erosion and gas leaks develop slowly and are only found through regular testing. Trained test staff detect these problems early and keep switchgear reliable.
What delegates will be able to do
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to
- Measure contact resistance and compare results with manufacturer limits
- Carry out timing and travel tests on breaker operating mechanisms
- Analyse trip and close coil current signatures for mechanism faults
- Check SF6 gas condition and vacuum interrupter integrity
- Prepare a breaker test report with condition findings and recommendations
Who should attend
Test technicians, protection and maintenance technicians, electricians and commissioning engineers at utilities, municipalities, mines and industrial plants. Delegates should have experience working on switchgear and know safe isolation procedures.
How it is delivered
Practical sessions with breaker analysers and micro-ohmmeters on sample breakers, facilitator demonstrations and interpretation of sample test records. It is available as a public course or in-house at your premises. The practical work needs equipment and supervision, so it is not offered online. Duration and dates are confirmed in your quote, and in-house groups can have the examples and exercises fitted to their organisation.
