About this course
Shows delegates how to trace the route and depth of buried power and communication cables before excavation or during fault finding. Topics include active and passive locating, direct connection, clamp and induction signal methods, frequency selection, depth measurement, separating adjacent services, marking and recording routes, and safe digging practice.
Why this course
Cable strikes during excavation cause outages, repair costs and serious injuries, and inaccurate records are common on older networks. Trained staff who can trace cables accurately prevent damage to services, protect workers and contractors, and improve the accuracy of network records.
What delegates will be able to do
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to
- Select the right locating method and signal frequency for a buried cable
- Trace a cable route using direct connection, clamp and induction methods
- Measure cable depth and distinguish target cables from nearby services
- Mark and record cable routes accurately for network records
- Apply safe excavation practice around located cables
Who should attend
Cable locators, network technicians, electricians, excavation supervisors and survey staff at utilities, municipalities, telecoms companies and civil contractors. No prior locating experience is required.
How it is delivered
Practical field sessions using cable locators and signal generators on buried cable routes, supported by facilitator demonstrations and short classroom sessions. It is available as a public course or in-house at your premises. The practical work needs equipment and supervision, so it is not offered online. Duration and dates are confirmed in your quote, and in-house groups can have the examples and exercises fitted to their organisation.
