About this course
Sets out the routine and acceptance tests carried out on low and medium voltage power cables after installation, after repair and during maintenance. Delegates cover insulation resistance testing, continuity and phasing checks, sheath testing, withstand testing with DC and very low frequency sources, test voltage selection, safe isolation and earthing, and correct recording of results.
Why this course
Energising a cable that has not been properly tested risks failures, damage to connected plant and injury to staff. Inconsistent testing also leaves no reliable record for later fault finding. Correct testing confirms that new and repaired cables are fit for service and gives a baseline for future maintenance.
What delegates will be able to do
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to
- Isolate, prove dead and earth a cable safely before testing
- Carry out insulation resistance, continuity and phasing tests on power cables
- Select test voltages and durations for withstand tests on different cable types
- Perform sheath integrity tests on medium voltage cables
- Record and interpret test results against acceptance criteria
Who should attend
Electricians, cable jointers, test technicians and commissioning staff at utilities, municipalities, mines and electrical contractors. Basic electrical knowledge and familiarity with low and medium voltage cables are assumed.
How it is delivered
Practical sessions on test cables with insulation testers and withstand test sets, facilitator demonstrations of safe test set-up and exercises on recording and interpreting results. It is available as a public course or in-house at your premises. The practical work needs equipment and supervision, so it is not offered online. Duration and dates are confirmed in your quote, and in-house groups can have the examples and exercises fitted to their organisation.
