Cable Jointing and Termination

Course code ECC 001. Energy, Electrical and Utilities.

About this course

Develops the practical skill to joint and terminate low and medium voltage power cables safely and to a lasting standard. Delegates cover cable construction and types, preparation and stripping, stress control, heat-shrink, cold-shrink and resin joint systems, indoor and outdoor terminations, earthing and screen connections, and the inspection and testing of completed work.

Why this course

Poorly made joints and terminations are among the most common causes of cable failures, leading to outages, fires and costly excavation. Many failures trace back to small errors in preparation or stress control. Competent jointers reduce repeat faults, protect network reliability and avoid the cost of redoing work.

What delegates will be able to do

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to

  • Identify cable types and construction and select the correct joint kit
  • Prepare cable ends correctly, including screen and insulation removal
  • Install heat-shrink and cold-shrink joints on low and medium voltage cables
  • Make indoor and outdoor terminations with correct stress control and earthing
  • Inspect completed joints and apply basic tests before energising

Who should attend

Cable jointers, electricians, line technicians and apprentices in utilities, municipalities, mines and electrical contractors. Delegates should have basic electrical knowledge and be authorised, or working towards authorisation, to work on cable networks.

How it is delivered

Hands-on workshop sessions where delegates make joints and terminations on cable samples under facilitator supervision, with step-by-step demonstrations and checks of finished work. It is available as a public course or in-house at your premises. The practical work needs equipment and supervision, so it is not offered online. Duration and dates are confirmed in your quote, and in-house groups can have the examples and exercises fitted to their organisation.

Upcoming dates

Public course dates appear here once the course calendar is live. In-house dates are arranged with you.
