About this course
Focuses on assessing the condition of medium and high voltage cables before they fail. Delegates study insulation ageing and water treeing, very low frequency testing, tan delta measurement, partial discharge testing and location, and how to combine results to rank cables by condition. The course shows how diagnostic data supports replacement and maintenance decisions across a cable network.
Why this course
Many utilities run ageing cable networks and replace cables only after they fail, at high cost and with long outages. Diagnostic testing identifies weak sections early so they can be repaired or replaced in a planned way. Organisations get better value from limited capital budgets and suffer fewer unplanned outages.
What delegates will be able to do
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to
- Explain common cable ageing mechanisms, including water treeing and partial discharge
- Carry out tan delta measurements and interpret the results
- Perform partial discharge tests and locate discharge sites along a cable
- Rank cable sections by condition using combined diagnostic results
- Recommend repair or replacement priorities based on diagnostic findings
Who should attend
Cable engineers, senior test technicians, asset managers and maintenance planners in utilities and large industrial users of medium and high voltage cables. Delegates should have experience of cable testing or fault location.
How it is delivered
Facilitator-led sessions with instrument demonstrations, analysis of real tan delta and partial discharge data sets, and group exercises on condition ranking. It is available as a public course or in-house at your premises. The practical work needs equipment and supervision, so it is not offered online. Duration and dates are confirmed in your quote, and in-house groups can have the examples and exercises fitted to their organisation.
