About this course
Develops the skills to analyse business needs and design information systems that meet them. Topics include the systems development life cycle, feasibility studies, requirements elicitation through interviews and workshops, process and data modelling with data flow diagrams and entity relationship diagrams, UML use case and class diagrams, prototyping, agile methods, system specifications and user acceptance testing.
Why this course
Many system implementations fail because requirements were unclear, incomplete or misunderstood by developers. Skilled analysts close the gap between users and technical teams, which reduces rework, cost overruns and systems that staff refuse to use. This matters equally for in-house development and for writing specifications when procuring systems from vendors.
What delegates will be able to do
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to
- Conduct a feasibility study covering technical, operational and financial factors
- Elicit and document user requirements through interviews and facilitated workshops
- Model business processes and data using DFDs and entity relationship diagrams
- Produce UML use case and class diagrams for a proposed system
- Prepare a system specification and user acceptance test plan
Who should attend
Business analysts, systems analysts, developers, ICT project officers and user representatives involved in specifying or procuring systems. A general understanding of how organisations use information systems is assumed.
How it is delivered
Practical workshops in which delegates analyse a case organisation, run requirements interviews in role-play, and produce models and specifications in small teams. It is available as a public course, in-house at your premises, or as live virtual sessions. Duration and dates are confirmed in your quote, and in-house groups can have the examples and exercises fitted to their organisation.
