Advanced Project Monitoring and Evaluation for Developmental Projects

Course code PM 006. Project Management and M&E.

About this course

Higher-level monitoring and evaluation for social and economic development projects with several components or sites. Delegates refine theories of change and results chains, set outcome and impact indicators, choose between experimental, quasi-experimental and theory-based evaluation designs, assess cost-effectiveness, and build learning and adaptive management into implementation.

Why this course

Development projects in health, water, agriculture, education and local economic development are increasingly judged on outcomes rather than activities. Funders and oversight bodies expect credible evidence of results and value for money. Staff who can design rigorous M&E for these projects help their organisations account for public and donor funds and improve the next round of interventions.

What delegates will be able to do

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to

  • Refine a theory of change and results chain for a multi-component development project
  • Define outcome and impact indicators with baselines, targets and clear data sources
  • Choose a suitable evaluation design and justify it against budget and data constraints
  • Assess the cost-effectiveness of alternative development interventions
  • Set up learning reviews that feed monitoring findings back into project decisions

Who should attend

M&E managers, senior M&E officers, programme managers and planning officials in government departments, municipalities, development agencies and NGOs. Delegates should already have practical M&E experience and be familiar with logframes and indicators.

How it is delivered

Facilitator-led sessions on development project case studies, group design of evaluation plans, and practical work on delegates' own results frameworks and indicators. It is available as a public course, in-house at your premises, or as live virtual sessions. Duration and dates are confirmed in your quote, and in-house groups can have the examples and exercises fitted to their organisation.
