Accounting and Finance Policies and Procedures

Course code FBARM 001. Central Banking, Finance and Audit.

About this course

Covers how to write, review and maintain the finance policy manual that governs day-to-day accounting work. Topics include the chart of accounts, approval limits and delegations of authority, segregation of duties, the procure-to-pay and revenue cycles, month-end close, asset registers and document retention. Delegates leave with a structure and drafting approach for policies that staff can follow and auditors can test.

Why this course

Many audit findings trace back to procedures that are outdated, unwritten or ignored in practice. Clear, current policies reduce errors and opportunities for fraud, speed up the close, make onboarding easier and give management and auditors a documented basis for every control. The course helps finance teams close the gap between what the manual says and what staff actually do.

What delegates will be able to do

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to

  • Draft finance policies and step-by-step procedures in a consistent, usable format
  • Set approval limits and delegations of authority that match the organisation's structure
  • Map key accounting cycles and identify where controls and segregation of duties are needed
  • Review an existing finance manual for gaps, contradictions and outdated practice
  • Plan the rollout, staff training and periodic review of revised policies

Who should attend

Finance managers, financial and management accountants, internal auditors and senior finance officers who write or enforce finance procedures in public bodies, state-owned enterprises and private companies. A working knowledge of accounting is assumed.
