About this course
Teaches the construction and use of input-output tables for economic analysis. Topics include the structure of supply and use tables, deriving symmetric input-output tables, technical coefficients and the Leontief inverse, output, income and employment multipliers, backward and forward linkages, and impact analysis of investment projects and sector shocks. All calculations are carried out in Excel.
Why this course
Ministries and development agencies need to show how investments, industrial policies or plant closures affect output, jobs and incomes across the economy. Input-output analysis gives a transparent, data-based way to estimate these effects and identify sectors with the strongest linkages for policy support.
What delegates will be able to do
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to
- Interpret supply and use tables and derive a symmetric input-output table
- Calculate technical coefficients and the Leontief inverse matrix in Excel
- Compute output, income and employment multipliers by sector
- Identify key sectors using backward and forward linkage analysis
- Estimate the economy-wide impact of an investment project or demand shock
Who should attend
Economists, statisticians and policy analysts in ministries of finance, trade, industry and planning, statistics offices, central banks and development finance institutions. Delegates need basic economics and good Excel skills, matrix algebra is introduced on the course.
How it is delivered
Practical computer sessions in Excel, with step-by-step matrix calculations, worked examples using national tables and a group impact analysis exercise. It is available as a public course, in-house at your premises, or as live virtual sessions. Duration and dates are confirmed in your quote, and in-house groups can have the examples and exercises fitted to their organisation.
